Bodegas San José has been producing sumptuous Monastrell blends for decades. A tiny parcel of old vines planted in their highland vineyard in 1900 still flourishes and adds powerful dark fruit complexity and structure to the vibrant flavours of the younger Tempranillo in this wine. Ageing in oak has added smoothness and subtle vanilla aromas. In recognition of its quality, Jumilla was one of Spain's first DOs. The region is extremely dry and desert like, which prevents vines from reaching more than a few inches in height, while producing grapes of enviable richness and intensity. The harvesting, however, is back breaking work! Spare the pickers a thought as you enjoy this wine with grilled red meats or hearty casseroles.
