A handful of Kiwi estates pioneered certain grapes but first off the blocks with Sauvignon (in 1973!) was Matua Valley Wines, makers of the superb Shingle Peak. Quality is tip-top ' seven Gold medals in the last three vintages! Don't miss the 2014.
Guld - China International Wine & Spirit Comp 2014
Shingle Peak Reserve is a special selection of Sauvignon from Matua Valley Wines. This groundbreaking estate was started in 1973 by brothers Ross and Bill Spence, in an old tin shed in the heart of the Marlborough region. They quickly gained a reputation for innovative, award winning wines, and it was their Sauvignon Blanc that inspired Marlborough's Sauvignon revolution in subsequent decades. Today, the estate is as pristine and modern as any and their winemaker, Nikolai St George, was awarded 'Winemaker of the Year' in 2013 and 2014. Shingle Peak 2014 is really intense, full of lemon, green pepper and grassy notes with ripe passion fruit and pineapple flavours to balance. Enjoy this wine with fish and chips, mussels or a salade niçoise.
