Michael and Fil Scarpantoni only produce tiny quantities from their small cellar in the premium McLaren Vale, but have a great following for their wines. This is a red full of all the ripe blackberry and smoky spice you'd expect from fine McLaren.
Originally from Italy's Abruzzo, Domenico Scarpantoni arrived Down Under in 1952 and started work in a winery. When he had saved enough cash he purchased a 5.6 hectare vineyard. In 1979 his sons, Michael and Filippo, built a cellar and have gradually acquired another 30 hectares of vines. They still like to keep everything small and pay meticulous attention to detail. The result is over 300 awards in competitions, some top Parker ratings and a cult like following for their wines. This Reserve red may be the classic Aussie blend of Cabernet and Shiraz, but there's nothing ordinary about its quality. Dense cassis and raspberry richness with smoky oak ' ideal for barbecues or roast red meats. Warming on its own at the end of the evening.
