Brunello is a strain of the Sangiovese grape found around Sienna and coveted for the especially rich, dark reds it creates. The grape's most famous incarnation is Brunello di Montalcino, which achieved official DOCG status in 1980. These days, the wines from slightly lesser sites or from vines deemed too young to yet create the power consumers demand are sold as Rosso di Montalcino. As Hugh Johnson notes, "In fine vintages, it can age well and offers very good value" (Wine Companion). 2010 was an excellent year, its wines "lean, balanced, and with excellent acidity and aromatic character" (jancisrobinson.com).A year's ageing in barrel has lent a sophisticated oaky tone to the superb floral and fruity style. Great with slow roasted pork.
