This is only the second vintage of Groote Kaap Viognier (their hugely concentrated red has been a firm favourite for some time). It’s made by the award winning Frans Smit at Spier Estate, which was voted among the Cape’s top wineries by South Africa’s Wine magazine. It’s a magnificent property and a great place to stay if you're ever in the area. They also support a cheetah conservation project and an eagle sanctuary, and own extensive gardens and farmland.Groote Kaap uses Viognier – the prized white grape of the northern Rhône. It's all about fruit, with no oak. Its aromatic flavours make it a fine match for spicy food like Thai green curry or chicken korma, while its weighty texture makes it an excellent partner with sauced white meats.
