Fans of Saint Emilion should look to neighbouring Côtes de Castillon to find wines of a similar, smooth style at a fraction of the price. Indeed, some of Bordeaux's greatest names have bought estates here. Enjoy this silky, ripe, elegant claret.
Château Roque le Mayne is a 15 hectare property owned by Jean-Francois and Christelle Meynard in the commune of Saint Colombe in Côtes de Castillon. 'The region that has captured the crown for 'rising star'' (Oz Clarke), Côtes de Castillon is bordered to the west by Saint Emilion and has attracted much attention from Bordeaux's top winemakers and critics in recent years ' many of whom see soil, vines and fruit that rival Bordeaux's finest. No wonder Jean-Francois likes to compare his wines with the very best, including those of his more famous neighbours. This is a sensational, modern Right Bank red that excelled in 2012 ' and it's brilliant value. A fine match with local specialities such as rib-eye steak, duck breast or lamb cutlets.
