From a truly remarkable vintage, wines of 2009 show glorious, rich, ripe fruit. We'd say Château Pellebouc even surpasses that thanks to meticulous work both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Plump, velvety Merlot charm and delicious length.
We love working with Ludovic Roussillon, who always gives us a warm welcome and the pick of his Bordeaux cellar. His estate in Entre Deux Mers is run in partnership with the Thienpoint family, owners of Château Le Pin (£5,000 plus a bottle) ''so he knows a thing or two about richly textured wines. The estate's soils are pure limestone and very rocky, so vines are kept well drained and grapes are wonderfully concentrated. Our own Bordeaux specialist, buyer and winemaker, Jean Marc Sauboua, helped Ludovic squeeze even more from his grapes in 2009 ' 'the greatest vintage Bordeaux has ever produced' (Steven Spurrier). And the results are truly delicious. Made mostly from Merlot with a touch of Cabernet, this is a fine partner to a Sunday roast.
