Classico is the original and most prestigious Chianti zone, first recognised for quality in 1716. Canto del Diavolo Riserva, oak aged Sangiovese with dashes of Cabernet and Merlot, rivals Super Tuscans for quality, and the 2010 is a great vintage.
The Canonica a Cerreto estate lies on elevated land affording excellent views of Siena. Monks from Siena Cathedral built the original cellar one thousand years ago. In 2003 the Bernabei family built a new cellar to maximise quality from their exceptional terroir. Their Chianti Classico Riserva is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot, from the finest parcels of vines, aged in French oak barriques for 18 months. The Wine Advocate'sItalian critic Antonio Galloni writes: ,In my view, 2010 will go down as one of the great all-time vintages in Tuscany., The wine is complex and structured with notes of ripe berries, spice and violets. It is best enjoyed with classic Italian cuisine such as wild mushroom risotto or wild boar casserole.
