This is a powerful, Rhône style red from Adam Hooper at Red Heads. Selecting grapes from the finest growers in the Vale, he carefully fermented the wine to obtain lots of fruit and minimal tannins, then aged it in French oak. Truly luscious and long.
Adam Hooper is a top winemaker, who not only makes many of our fabulous Red Heads wines, but also has his own 4.5 Star winery in the McLaren Vale, with all his 2010 wines rated 90 points and above. Adam is very fond of Grenache, but regards it as as finicky as Pinot Noir. 'The trick is to create wine with velvety texture and varietal character but to keep the alcohol in check' he says. He works closely with grower friends to obtain the ripest, most concentrated grapes, and for Back Shed ferments in open top vats, partially with whole grapes to maximise fruit and minimise tannins. Eight months in oak has added toasty spice to this Châteauneuf inspired mix of Shiraz and Grenache. Enjoy this rich red with lamb stew, lasagne or peppered steak.
