Godello offers 'the softly aromatic apricot character of Albariño but has a silkier texture' (Oz Clarke). For fans of complex aromatic whites it's a must try, and this fine example from the high, cool vineyards of Galicia is a great place to start.
Silver - Decanter 2014
One of Spanien'smost fashionable grape varieties, Godello is native to the high, cool vineyards of Galicia on the tip of northwest Spanien. Some of the best come from Monterrei, which has been renowned for its wines since the Middle Ages and was recently granted DO status. This is a rich, racy example from a top estate. The owners needed to move stock from the cellar fast and, as a result, we got a great deal which is simply too good to miss. We chose the name Sendero das Meigas or ,Way of the Magi, after the sorceresses who are central to Galician folklore. This bewitching white is delicious on its own but also goes especially well with fresh seafood (very much the local fare in Galicia). Enjoy with lemon sole, prawns or spicy crab cakes.
