Blaye, on the Right Bank of the Gironde, offers outstanding Bordeaux at affordable prices , thanks to a growing number of producers determined to make claret to rank alongside the finest Saint Emilions and Médocs. Les Grands Maréchaux has been on top form since the current owners took control five years ago. Winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt, who has worked at many top Saint Emilion estates including La Mondotte, Canon La Gaffelière and Pavie Macquin, matured the majority of the wine in new oak barrels, such was the richness of the fruit. A fine petit château claret from a brilliant vintage, Les Grands Maréchaux is delicious now but will develop for years.
