The Anton family are behind the great Izadi Riojas and, since 2003, owners too of Bodegas Vetus in Toro. Their flagship red, Celsus, is only made in top vintages, using grapes from century old vines. Powerful berry fruit with a chocolatey, oaky edge.
Only 1,000 bottles are made of this iconic red, the flagship wine of Bodegas Vetus. Perched on a hill, overlooking its 20 hectares of vines, the estate grows only Tinta del Toro, the local name for Tempranillo. They reserve grapes from their Camparrón plot, where pre-phylloxera vines, over 100 years old, produce tiny berries, impressively dense in flavour. Ageing for 14 months in French barriques has lent a subtle note of vanilla scented oak to the powerful fruit. Made only in 5-Star vintages, this red offers up cherry, berry and cassis fruit with mocha and tobacco hints. A firm, very well structured red, it will reward cellaring. For drinking over the next five years ' pour into a decanter to breathe and serve with red meats or venison.
