Torrontel (known in Argentina as Torrontés) produces delightful grapey aromas and delicate tangerine notes, all underpinned by a racy citrus freshness. Flavours are even more intense in Antakari thanks to the Elqui Valley's amazing clarity of light.
Despite lying right next door to the Atacama Desert, the Elqui Valley has ideal conditions for vines , brilliant pure sunshine and a cool down draught from the Pacific. There'sno rain, but snowmelt from the Andes provides all the water the vines need, and the vineyards produce fruit with fabulous purity and intensity. Antakari is from Viña Falernia, one of only two wineries in the valley. It was built by Italian cousins Aldo Olivier and Giorgio Flessati, who began the project in 1995 , blasting rock, importing vines and setting up irrigation systems. Grapes picked early in the morning, cool fermented and bottled young ensure wonderful freshness, and this white is as crisp as it gets. Serve solo or with asparagus, salmon or Thai crab cakes.
