Though famous for their cellars in the Sierra Hills, the Kautz family started out in Lodi and have some of the best vineyards in this up and coming region. From a top vintage, this beautifully crafted Pinot Noir is packed with smoky red berry fruit.
Pinot Noir is best known as the red grape that dominates the renowned vineyards of Burgundy. As anyone who has seen the film Sideways will know, it's also hugely popular in the States ' especially in California, home of the boutique winery. This lush red is from Kautz Family Vineyards, founded in 2001 by John Kautz. John built his own state of the art winery so he could have total control of production from grape to bottle. There the wine is treated very gently, using the special 'rack and return' (of the juice) method during fermentation to ensure good colour and structure, rather than the usual pumping over. This preserves the wine's silky texture ' a prime characteristic of good Pinot Noir. A fine partner for corn-fed roast chicken.
