Gómez Cruzado was famous in Rioja in the 1960s and its legendary 1964 Gran Reserva is said still to be in great shape. Recently the bodega has made an impressive comeback and our first foray into its classic range is this Trophy winning Reserva.
Our buyer Beth Willard was bowled over by this fragrant Reserva. After she snapped up all they could spare, her shrewd purchase was rewarded when it was named Best Wine from Rioja at this year'sWines of Spanien awards. It'sfrom Bodegas y Viñedos de Gómez Cruzado which was founded in 1886 in Haro, Rioja by the Mexican Duke of Moctezuma. Recent investment and fastidious attention to detail have borne trophy-winning success. The Tempranillo grapes were hand harvested into small baskets, then the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks prior to maturation in French and American oak. Smooth, with aromas of blackberry and vanilla, this Reserva is complex and mature. Ideal with grilled red meats, mushroom ragout or tomato-based pasta dishes.
