Doft & Smak
Côtes du Rhône nearly always guarantees you a reliable, good value red. The words 'Villages', 'Plan de Dieu' and 'Domaine du Vallon' take you several notches higher in classic southern French warmth and big, herbal scented, velvety ripe black fruit.

Another vintage and another hallowed Côtes du Rhône Villages from Hugues Meffre of Domaine du Vallon. Descended from a long line of winemakers stretching back 400 years, Hugues owns properties in both Gigondas and Châteauneuf du Pape, but his best value wines come from the Plan de Dieu. Meaning 'Plain of God', it lies at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail hills and earned Côtes du Rhône Villages status in 2005. The land is so stony you'd think nothing could grow here, but ancient Grenache vines dig deep, thrive and produce tiny knots of intensely flavoursome grapes and wines of wonderful intensity. This is a silky smooth red with lush blackberry character. Perfectly suited to beef casserole, steak and kidney pie or garlic roast lamb.
