From the much overlooked 2011 vintage, this is a classically structured claret – just beginning to open up now to reveal intense berry fruit and herby complexity. Château Puy Blanquet is a lovely property located at Saint Etienne de Lisse, a few miles to the east of the medieval town of Saint Emilion. Roger Jacquet acquired the estate in 1958 and since his death in 2000 his wife Marcelle has been at the helm, assisted by Pierre Meunier, who trained under Jean-Pierre Moueix, one of the most famous names in Bordeaux. This wine is a classic blend of Merlot with the two Cabernets matured for 12 months in oak barrels, adding some complex notes of liquorice and tobacco leaf.
