With no grand facade to hide behind, Verniotte stands entirely on its own merits. And stand it does, head and shoulders above similarly priced clarets. This is a labour of love from Henry Laithwaite, not to be missed by fans of Saint Emilion chic.
Château Verniotte 2009 is a 'garage wine' ' a top end, tiny volume Saint Emilion style claret crafted by Henry Laithwaite, a winemaker who's been highly praised by American wine critic Robert Parker. Key to the wine's intensity are rare old Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines in the heart of Castillon (the area insiders look to for Saint Emilion Grand Cru quality at a fraction of the price). In the superb 2009 vintage they produced wonderfully ripe grapes with excellent flavour intensity.Verniotte was aged in finest new French oak barrels to round out its tannins and add another fragrant layer of flavour. With mouthfilling fruit and polished, gentle tannins, this is a claret to enjoy with flame grilled fillet of lamb or beef in red wine.
